Indian captain Rohit Sharma explained the unique celebration of eating grass from the Barbados pitch following India’s triumph in the 2024 T20 World Cup. After a 17-year wait, the Men in Blue clinched the title on Saturday, leading to an emotional celebration filled with tears and hugs. Among these, Rohit’s grass-eating moment stood out.
In a video posted by BCCI, Rohit clarified that his actions were not planned. He described how he was overwhelmed by the moment and felt a deep connection to the pitch that played a crucial role in their victory. “Nothing was scripted. I was feeling the moment. When I went to the pitch, it was because that pitch gave us this (WC trophy). We played on that particular pitch and we won the game. That particular ground as well, I will remember that ground forever in my life and that pitch as well.
He further explained that he wanted a piece of the pitch as a memento of the place where their dreams came true.
Reflecting on India’s T20 World Cup win, Rohit admitted that it still felt surreal. It’s been a great moment right from when the game was over till now. It feels like a dream; we still feel that it hasn’t happened. Although it has happened, it feels like it hasn’t happened. That’s the emotion, that’s the meaning that you have.” Rohit’s heartfelt explanation highlights the deep emotions and significance of the victory for him and the team.
